Building Unreliable Systems out of Reliable Components:
The Real-Time Story
Slide 2 – Introduction to “Building Unreliable Systems Out Of Reliable Components: The Real-Time Story” by Dr. Lee, EECS UC Berkeley This is not the first time I have used this title; the first time was about a month ago. I was invited to give a plenary talk at the Monterey Workshop, which is a workshop on software engineering. And the theme was on “building reliable systems out of unreliable components” [audience laughter]. But I misread the announcement and so I said “wow this is something I know about [audience laughter]. So I was very excited, but when I went there, they were a little taken aback with my misunderstanding of their workshop. I think that the title is fairly appropriate, it is meant to be provocative – of course. I think that to some degree, this talk is meant to be provocative. And I’ll go out on a limb several times and make statements that you will recognize are fairly extreme. But they are meant to be thought provoking and to challenge the dogma that we got surrounding us.
